5 Local Markets to Visit in Fiji
If you’re the kind of traveller who wants to immerse yourself in local life, don’t miss the chance to visit one of Fiji’s many traditional markets. Here, you can shop for locally-made handicrafts, sample fresh fruit and vegetables, and get to know the friendly people who call Fiji home.
Here are five of the best markets in Fiji to check out on your next holiday.
Vuda Beach Market
Just 30 minutes north of Nadi is the Vuda Beach Market, one of the most accessible Fijian markets for those holidaying in the resort haven of Denarau Island. Held every second Saturday, this beachside market sells both locally grown produce and locally made handicrafts. Once you’ve found the perfect souvenir to take home, why not grab some yummy bites and enjoy a picnic on beautiful Vuda Beach?
Lawai Pottery Village, Sigatoka
Experience the ‘real’ Fiji during a tour of Lawai Pottery Village, located in the Coral Coast town of Sigatoka. Offering more than just market stalls, visitors are treated to traditional Fijian dance and kava ceremonies, along with pottery-making demonstrations. Afterwards, take some time to browse and purchase handmade pottery, along with other traditional gifts and artefacts. Just make sure that any pottery you do purchase is glazed, to ensure you’re able to bring it back home to Australia.
Curio & Handicraft Market, Suva
The Curio & Handicraft Market is easily one of the best markets in Fiji. Located in the Fijian capital of Suva, this bustling market has over 70 stalls selling genuine Fijian textiles, jewellery, ceramics and carvings – why not pick up a traditional souvenir like a kava bowl or tapa cloth? Plus, the Curio & Handicraft offers a great insight into Fijian culture and the local artisans are more than happy to chat with visitors about their craft.
Savusavu Farmers’ Market, Savusavu
Positioned on the island of Vanua Levu, Savusavu Farmers’ Market is the place to shop for fresh and locally grown fruit and vegetables. Here, you can also sample some of Fiji’s best seafood, including tuna, lobster and prawns. Just around the corner is the handicrafts market, where you’ll find a selection of handmade crafts, jewellery and artworks. Keep in mind that Savusavu Farmers’ Market can get very busy on Saturdays, so we recommend planning your visit for another day.
Lautoka Market, Lautoka
Located less than an hour north of Denarau Island in Fiji’s Sugar City, Lautoka Market is known for its fresh produce and locally caught seafood. As a lesser visited destination, Lautoka Market caters more to locals than tourists, which is what makes it so fascinating to visit – we bet that you won’t even recognise half the fruits and vegetables on sale! Visit on a Saturday to also check out the weekly flea market, keeping an eye out for the ‘Fijian Made’ stamp to support Fiji’s local trade and economy.
